Have We Overcomplicated
Feeding Our Dogs?
Walk into any pet store today and feeding your dog can suddenly feel incredibly complicated. Scoops. Cups. Pellets. Grain free. High protein. Low fat. Senior formulas. Puppy formulas. Prescription diets. Endless ingredient lists and conflicting advice online.
Somewhere along the way, feeding our dogs became confusing. Yet dogs themselves have not changed nearly as much as the pet food aisle has.
Dogs are still biologically designed for real food
Despite generations of domestication, dogs are still biologically designed to thrive on moisture-rich, meat-based diets. Dogs are facultative carnivores — their digestive systems, teeth, stomach acidity, and nutritional requirements still reflect this.
This doesn’t mean feeding has to become extreme or complicated. In fact, we believe the opposite is true. The goal is not perfection. The goal is feeding dogs in a way that makes biological sense while still fitting into modern life.
Why modern feeding has become so overwhelming
Some people are told dry pellets are the only safe option. Others are told raw feeding is too difficult. Then there are calorie calculators, feeding charts, and endless social media opinions. The result? Many pet parents end up second-guessing themselves constantly.
We see this all the time at Doggy Chef. Customers tell us:
The problem isn’t convenience
Convenience itself is not the enemy. Most modern dog owners are busy — you’re balancing work, family, schedules, and life. Convenience matters.
The problem starts when convenience completely disconnects us from what dogs are biologically designed to eat. Many ultra-processed pet foods rely heavily on carbohydrates and starches to create shelf-stable pellets, yet dogs have no nutritional requirement for these starches in their diet.
Simpler feeding often makes more sense
At Doggy Chef, we’ve found that many dog owners are actually looking for simplicity. They want:
- Real ingredients they can recognise
- Easy feeding routines that fit their lifestyle
- Clear portion guidance without the guesswork
- Confidence that their dog is getting what they need
- Less stress around nutrition
That’s exactly why we created our pre-portioned meal system. Instead of expecting customers to calculate calories, balance nutrients, or work out complicated feeding percentages themselves, we calculate personalised portions based on your dog’s individual profile.
Every dog is different
A highly active Border Collie and a senior French Bulldog do not have the same nutritional requirements. A growing puppy and an overweight adult dog do not need the same calories. Even two dogs of the same breed may require very different feeding plans. That’s why one-size-fits-all feeding charts often create more confusion than clarity.
That doesn’t mean every owner has to become a canine nutrition expert overnight. It simply means choosing feeding solutions that make biological sense while still working in the real world.
